Description

Students who are driven to learn more will find these sessions challenging but stimulating. The theory sessions will focus only on the most provident content required to establish the end clusters and, in some cases, might be a bit intimidating to most students.

Overview

This module teaches students how to configure physical hardware (switches, storage and servers) to create a cluster that can be utilised for either High-Performance Computing or virtual infrastructure used for private cloud computing. Both these outcomes can enable various scientific applications such as Molecular Dynamics, Bio-Informatics, Fluid Dynamics or, in the case of cloud infrastructure, Data Sciences and remote sensing.

An entrepreneur can also use this knowledge to create a start-up business. The cloud services used are used by a well-known (but undisclosed) organisation with over 200 thousand servers in their production cluster.

This module will be fast-paced, and students will have to follow instructions as time for debugging will be limited.

The following content will be discussed and in most cases, configured by participants:

  • Infrastructure
    • Hardware concepts, the importance of certain components
  • GNU Linux theory and practical
    • Installing ±3 Linux machines to be used later
  • TCP/IP concepts and Firewalling
    • Installing and configuring a Firewall
  • Theory: Networking and network segmentation using VLANs
    • Practical: VLAN configuration using physical switches
  • Distributed File Systems
    • Installing a NAS device
  • Hypervisors and Cloud Infrastructure installation
    • Installing a private cloud to host services
  • Domain Services such as DNS, DHCP, NTP, NAT, LDAP
    • Installing and configuring required domain services

If time allows, we will also have a look at more advanced concepts such as:

  • System Installation/Configuration Automation
    • Creating playbooks to deploy systems
  • Containers
    • Using Docker and management tools for Docker
  • Kubernetes
    • Creating a Kubernetes cluster to ensure high availability etc.
