The Department of Animal Science, in collaboration with the UFS HPC, presents a hands-on workshop which aims to enable researchers to use Linux and the High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources at the University of the Free State.

After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise and use HPC terminology in the context of using the UFS HPC
  • Login to the UFS HPC
  • Request resources from the UFS HPC
  • Understand the key differences between Linux and Windows file systems
  • Navigate and use a Linux filesystem using the command-line terminal

The workshop will be presented by Dr Louis L. du Preez, a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Animal Science.

Session Contents

The workshop consists of 4 sessions:

Session 1

  • Introduction to HPC and the UFS HPC
  • Logging into the UFS HPC and transferring files
  • Introduction to Linux
  • Introduction to the Linux Terminal - Navigating within the Linux file system

Session 2

  • Introduction to the Linux Terminal - Performing file operations in the Terminal

Session 3

  • Introduction to the Linux Terminal - Viewing and Editing text files in the Terminal

Session 4

  • Introduction to the Linux Terminal - Miscellaneous Commands and Concepts
