Presentation title: Small AI Habits, Big Time Savings: Practical AI for Everyday University Work
Outline: This session will introduce the AI theme in the UFS Digital Skills and Competencies Pathway and explain how it supports students in developing practical and responsible AI capabilities. The second part of the session will demonstrate simple, beginner-friendly, ways in which university staff can use AI to save time in everyday work. Participants will be introduced to reusable prompts and practical AI-supported workflows for everyday work tasks such as organising information, drafting communications, developing initial content structures and reviewing documents. The session will conclude with practical dos and don’ts for using AI responsibly, accurately and safely.
Session outline
· The AI theme in the Digital Skills and Competencies Pathway: An overview of what students can learn, how they can access the pathway and how lecturers can encourage participation.
· Small AI habits that save time: Beginner-friendly demonstrations of how AI can support common university tasks.
· Set it up once, save time repeatedly: How reusable prompts and simple workflows can reduce the time spent on recurring tasks.
· Using AI responsibly: Practical guidance on protecting sensitive information, verifying outputs and retaining human oversight and professional judgement.

Biography:
Anneri Meintjes Deputy Director: Evidence-Based Change, Centre for Teaching and Learning, University of the Free State
Anneri Meintjes leads the Evidence-Based Change focus area in the Centre for Teaching and Learning at the University of the Free State. Her work focuses on using research and institutional evidence to strengthen student success, teaching and learning, and educational practice. She was also involved in the development and expansion of the UFS Digital Skills and Competencies Pathway, which supports students in developing practical capabilities for learning, work and participation in an increasingly digital world.
Rohan Posthumus Data Scientist, Centre for Teaching and Learning, University of the Free State
Rohan Posthumus leads and contributes to data analytics and research initiatives in the UFS Centre for Teaching and Learning. His work includes advanced statistical analysis and modelling, data management, research methodology, and the development of software tools and applications that improve research and analysis workflows. He also provides training and guidance on data analysis and interpretation. Drawing on his programming expertise and advanced use of AI, Rohan develops practical solutions that make complex and repetitive tasks more efficient.
