Relocating men and masculinity studies: towards African-centred paradigms

Speaker:  Professor Sakhumzi Mfecane

Sakhumzi Mfecane (Dontsa) is based in the Department of Anthropology, University of the Western Cape, where he holds a position of associate professor. His research and teaching areas of interest include medical anthropology, anthropology of gender, and social theory. Sakhumzi has worked in the ‘field’ of men and masculinities for over 20 years, where he specialises in men’s health. He has served a researcher and consultant before joining UWC in 2010. He has written and published widely on HIV/AIDS (social aspects), men’s health and masculinities and recently, decolonial theories of men and masculinities. He has served as the head of Anthropology & Sociology Department (UWC) and senior mentor for the Mellon-Mays Undergraduate International Exchange Programme. Currently Sakhumzi is working on a book project that brings together his ideas and writings concerned with developing African-centred theories of men and masculinities.
